YouTube Launches AI-Driven Search Results Carousel to Enhance User Experience

YouTube is rolling out new artificial intelligence features to assist users in finding content and information more easily, the company announced on Thursday. The platform is introducing an AI-powered search results carousel, similar to Google AI Overviews, and is testing a conversational AI tool with a larger group of users.

The new AI-driven search results carousel, currently available only to YouTube Premium users in the U.S., will suggest videos and provide AI-generated brief summaries of topics to help users quickly locate what they’re seeking.

According to YouTube, this AI search results carousel will appear for searches related to shopping, locations, or entertainment in specific areas. For example, if someone searches for «best beaches in Hawaii,» they will see an AI-curated carousel featuring videos showcasing top snorkeling spots and volcanic beaches, along with descriptions and additional videos to assist in vacation planning.

This feature closely resembles Google AI Overviews—a tool that generates AI-generated brief descriptions at the top of Google’s search results page. While the AI search results carousel aims to simplify searching for users, it could pose challenges for content creators who rely on engagement for revenue.

For instance, if a user can obtain the information they need directly from the AI carousel, they may skip clicking through to the actual video.

The launch of the AI search results carousel occurred two weeks after a Wall Street Journal report indicated that Google AI Overviews and other AI tools are adversely affecting news outlets. YouTube creators may worry that this new carousel function could diminish engagement with their videos, as Google’s AI Overviews have reportedly led to a decline in traffic to news websites.

Regarding YouTube’s conversational AI tool, the Google-owned platform announced that it would be available to some non-Premium users as well. First introduced in late 2023, this tool employs AI to help users access more information, content recommendations, and video summaries. It can also be utilized for quizzing knowledge on key concepts presented in educational videos.

Upon launch, YouTube explained that the tool’s responses are generated by large language models that utilize information from both YouTube and online sources. The goal is to assist viewers in delving deeper into the content they are watching.

For instance, if you’re viewing a tutorial video on roller skating, the AI conversational tool might ask if you would like it to “summarize the video” or “recommend similar content.” You can also ask specific questions, such as “What song is playing in this video?” and the tool will provide details like the song title, artist, genre, and more.
