WhatsApp Set to Innovate Payment Experience with UPI Lite for Effortless Transactions

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new UPI Lite feature for its users. This feature aims to streamline the payment experience by allowing users to conduct transactions without needing to input a PIN. Similar to functionalities found on other platforms, this in-progress feature was identified through an APK analysis of a beta version of the app and is expected to be suitable for low-value transactions. This news emerges while reports indicate that WhatsApp is also developing a bill payment feature for users in India.

UPI Lite in WhatsApp

The functionality was identified by Android Authority during an APK breakdown of WhatsApp beta version 2.25.5.17. The code within the update is believed to have multiple strings that reference the anticipated UPI Lite feature. This could allow users to perform quick payments, even during server congestion. Moreover, transactions may be executed with a single click, aiming to minimize the chances of failure.

Additional code indicators suggest that users might have the option to deposit or withdraw funds at any time from the messaging app. However, activating UPI Lite will be device-specific and will not extend across multiple devices connected to the same account. Through this potential capability, WhatsApp could enhance its current UPI features, which enable users to link their UPI accounts to the app for payment purposes.

Previously, WhatsApp was reported to be expanding its financial services targeted at its Indian user base. It is allegedly making progress towards introducing the option for billing payments directly within the app. This may encompass payments for utilities such as electricity, mobile recharges, water bills, rent, piped gas, and postpaid landline bills.

Significantly, UPI Lite is an application formulated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that utilizes existing UPI ecosystem protocols for mobile devices. It is designed to handle low-value transactions, capped at under Rs. 500. This feature can function with the user’s mobile number and allows for payment processing even without a stable internet connection.
