UK Regulator Investigates Apple and Google for Suppressing Competition in Mobile Browsers

The competition authority in the UK reported that its examination group discovered that the mobile browser sector, primarily led by Apple and Google, is not functioning effectively for consumers and enterprises, substantiating its choice to initiate an investigation into this area in January.

A conclusive report from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) independent examination team indicated that most of its concerns were associated with Apple’s regulations regarding internet access on its devices through the Safari browser.

After releasing preliminary findings in November, the CMA launched an inquiry under its new authority in January.

The investigation will determine whether one or both companies possess «strategic market status» in mobile ecosystems, extending beyond the browser market assessed by the examination group.

The group suggested that if the companies were classified with SMS status, the CMA might explore interventions, such as boosting competitors’ ability to enhance their offerings.

Apple stated it advocates for «vibrant and dynamic markets that allow innovation to thrive,» emphasizing its commitment to user trust.

«We have reservations about this report and contend that the proposed solutions would compromise privacy, security, and the overall user experience,» a spokesperson commented.

«We will persist in engaging with the CMA in a constructive manner to address their concerns effectively.»

Google remarked that Android’s openness has been instrumental in «broadening choices, lowering costs, and democratizing access to smartphones and applications.»

«We are dedicated to open platforms that assist developers in creating thriving businesses and will work cooperatively with the CMA to establish a pro-innovation, evidence-based, and predictable regulatory environment that fosters growth in the UK,» a representative stated.

The report highlighted that Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome browsers hold a dominant position in the market, with Safari representing 88% of the browsers on Apple devices and Chrome covering 77% of devices utilizing Google’s Android operating system in 2024.

Margot Daly, chair of the independent inquiry team, stated that competition among various mobile browsers is not functioning effectively and is hindering innovation.

«I commend the CMA for its swift action in launching strategic market status inquiries into both Apple and Google’s mobile ecosystems,» she remarked.

«The comprehensive analysis we have presented today will be beneficial as this work evolves.»

The CMA indicated that its SMS inquiries are anticipated to conclude by the end of this year.
