UK Issues Stark Warning to Putin Over Russian Naval Intrusion and Laser Incident

The U.K. government issued a warning to the Kremlin on Wednesday, reporting that a Russian military vessel had entered British territorial waters and aimed lasers at U.K. pilots.

During a press briefing in London, Defense Secretary John Healey stated that this was the second intrusion of the year by the ship, which had previously entered British waters in January.

«The Yantar is currently situated on the periphery of U.K. waters, north of Scotland, after having made its way into our broader maritime territory in recent weeks,» he noted at a press conference at Downing Street.

In response, the U.K. military deployed a Royal Navy frigate and Royal Air Force aircraft to closely monitor and follow the movements of the Yantar, which reportedly targeted lasers at U.K. pilots.

Healey characterized the use of lasers as «extremely hazardous» and relayed a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

«We’re aware of your activities and watching you closely. Should the Yantar head south this week, we are prepared.»

He remarked that the Yantar is «part of a Russian fleet aimed at jeopardizing our underwater infrastructure and that of our allies.»

Concerns have intensified among Britain and NATO regarding the threats Moscow poses to offshore infrastructure, especially following recent incidents of sabotage targeting underwater telecommunications and power cables.

Analysts and lawmakers have accused Russia of waging a hybrid conflict against the West as tensions escalate over the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
