Trump Urges 30-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine, Vows Sanctions for Violations

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump urged for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that breaches would trigger sanctions.

«Discussions with Russia and Ukraine are ongoing. The U.S. advocates for an ideal scenario of a 30-day unconditional ceasefire,» Trump stated on his Truth Social platform shortly after his conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

«In the event that the ceasefire is ignored, the U.S. and its allies will implement additional sanctions,» he continued.

Trump emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine would be responsible for maintaining the integrity of these direct negotiations, asserting that the ceasefire should serve as the foundation for achieving “enduring peace.”

«This can all be accomplished quite rapidly, and I stand ready to assist at a moment’s notice if required,» he remarked.

In February, Trump initiated talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, aiming to fulfill a campaign promise to end the conflict within 24 hours of entering a second term. However, he has grown increasingly frustrated with both parties as hostilities continue.

Senior U.S. officials have indicated that Washington may reassess its role as a mediator if progress towards resolution is not attained soon.

Zelensky mentioned on social media on Thursday that Ukraine is open to negotiations «in any format,» but insisted that a comprehensive ceasefire must be established before any talks can commence.
