Trump Lauds Ovechkin as a Great Player After NHL Record Achievement

During a speech in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump praised captain Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, referring to him as a great player after he set a new NHL goal-scoring record. The Russian player surpassed the previous record held by Canadian forward Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals.

“A great gentleman has just broken Wayne Gretzky’s record. He is the greatest—Wayne Gretzky—but now we have another outstanding individual who has just achieved a significant milestone,” Trump was quoted by “USA Today.”

So far this season, the Russian superstar has played 61 games, accumulating 69 points (42 goals and 27 assists). He has been competing in the NHL since 2005.
