Trump Considers Joining Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks in Istanbul This Week

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of participating in direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul later this week.

Trump, who is scheduled to visit the Middle East, informed reporters at the White House that «there could be a positive outcome from the meeting on Thursday in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine.»

«I contemplated flying over,» the U.S. president remarked. «I have numerous meetings, but I was considering traveling there if I believe something can be achieved; it’s possible, but we need to make it happen.»

Ukraine and its European partners are calling on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire by the end of Monday, warning that additional sanctions will be imposed if Moscow does not comply.

Nevertheless, Russian President Vladimir Putin has effectively dismissed the proposal, suggesting direct discussions with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday instead. He indicated that during these discussions, the two parties might reach an agreement to halt hostilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by inviting Putin to meet him in person in Istanbul on the proposed date, although the Kremlin has not yet confirmed or denied the potential for such a meeting.

According to an unnamed Ukrainian official who spoke to Axios, Zelensky intends to proceed with travel to Turkey regardless of Moscow’s position on the ceasefire.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported early Monday that Russia had launched numerous drone assaults throughout the country overnight.
