The Next Divinity: A Century After Original Sin IIs Conclusion

Jason Schreier was not the only journalist to engage with the developers at Larian Studios and uncover further details about the upcoming Divinity. For instance, a report by the French outlet Jeuxvideo revealed that the game’s events will take place roughly 100 years after the conclusion of Divinity: Original Sin II.

It’s worth noting that the most recent installment in the series, chronologically speaking, is Divinity II: Ego Draconis, released in 2009. There is about a 60-year gap between this title and Original Sin II, indicating that the next Divinity will finally push the timeline forward. We may also witness a long-awaited continuation of the Chaos storyline, centered around the demon god whose avatar is the main antagonist of Ego Draconis, Damian.

This announcement has led gamers to speculate about what the canonical story truly is.

It seems the canonical ending of Original Sin II is the one where Lucian succeeds in his quest to cleanse the world of the Source. With the Seven Gods already vanquished, Lucian loses his divine powers. This may explain how Damian managed to imprison Lucian in Ego Draconis.

The death of the gods is likely to play a crucial role in the narrative of the new Divinity. This is suggested by a mysterious statement from the developers left on the official game website: “The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New forces awaken.”

Some gamers have speculated that the elderly man seen being burned in the debut trailer may actually be Lucian himself, as the desperate people of Rivellon might be ready to sacrifice him in hopes of the gods’ return. However, there is no official confirmation of this theory.

Aside from the timeline, the developers have shared additional details in various other sources:

There is currently no release date for Divinity. Like the studio’s previous titles, this one will go through an early access phase, which is set to begin no earlier than 2027.
