Sony Unveils the UBP-X700K Blu-ray Player, Marking Its First Release Since 2019

Sony has unveiled the UBP-X700K, a new Blu-ray player model. The Japanese company has not introduced any new Blu-ray player models since 2019. Although the UBP-X700K lacks some features present in the current UBP-X700 model, it is priced 25% higher in Japan.

The UBP-X700K serves as a more compact and simplified version of the UBP-X700, which was launched in January 2018. This new player does not include wireless networking capabilities, meaning it lacks video streaming applications, Spotify Connect, and screen mirroring functionality. Additionally, the Video & TV SideView remote control app has been removed.

In other aspects, the new device closely resembles Sony’s existing lineup of players. On the back panel, you’ll find one Ethernet port, two HDMI connections (one designated solely for audio), and a coaxial digital output.

The UBP-X700K supports HDR 10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X audio. It is compatible with UHD Blu-ray discs, standard Blu-ray discs, and DVDs.

The new player is expected to hit the market after April 2025, with a current price tag of $200.

Earlier this year, Sony announced the discontinuation of Blu-ray media production, marking nearly 20 years since their introduction. The company also ceased production of MiniDisc and MiniDV tapes. In mid-last year, Sony closed its consumer Blu-ray and optical disc manufacturing facilities but has maintained production lines for business and corporate clients.

By the end of last year, reports indicated that LG had halted Blu-ray player production. However, the South Korean company is not exiting the Blu-ray player market entirely.
