Severe Downpour Causes Widespread Flooding in Moscows Streets

Heavy downpours caused flash floods in Moscow on Tuesday, submerging roads and disrupting transportation throughout the Russian capital.

Social media footage revealed cars engulfed in murky water, traffic jams on flooded roads, and water cascading into tunnels and underground parking garages.

Officials stated that some areas of the city experienced a month’s worth of rainfall in less than two hours, although no injuries were reported.

City transport officials encouraged residents to utilize public transportation, despite service disruptions at various metro stations and on the Aeroexpress train to Sheremetyevo Airport.

This rainstorm followed a weekend heatwave and is part of a larger weather trend impacting central Russia. The southern regions have recently reported temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F).

Meteorologists indicated that heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds would continue in Moscow through Tuesday night and into the week.

Climate researchers have long cautioned that Russia, warming at a rate 2.5 times faster than the global average, is increasingly at risk of extreme weather incidents, including extended heatwaves and intense rainfall.
