Sergey Brin Urges Google Employees to Work Harder: At Least Every Weekday and 60 Hours a Week

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, stated that the company has the potential to lead the field of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) if its employees put in more effort.

“I recommend being in the office at least every weekday,” he wrote in a memo obtained by The New York Times. He also mentioned that “60 hours a week is the sweet spot for productivity.”

Brin believes that the final race for AGI has already begun. He emphasized that Google possesses «all the ingredients to win this competition, but more effort will be necessary.» However, he cautioned against working more than 60 hours per week, as it could lead to burnout. He also criticized those employees he felt were not contributing enough.

“Some people work fewer than 60 hours, and a small number are merely doing the bare minimum to get by. This latter group is not only unproductive but can also severely demoralize the rest,” he noted.

He further highlighted the importance of utilizing AI in coding. According to him, employees working on Gemini should strive to become “the most efficient coders and researchers in the AI field globally, leveraging Google’s own AI.”
