Samsung Unveils Innovative Foldable Handheld Gaming Console Concept in New Design Patent

Recently, Samsung unveiled the Flex Gaming Console, a conceptual foldable gaming device, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025). Following this, a design patent has disclosed another innovative foldable concept from the South Korean tech giant. Samsung has developed a portable gaming console that features a display capable of expanding into a significantly larger screen, and the device can be viewed in various configurations. It is also demonstrated with controls resembling those found on well-known gaming controllers.

Anticipated Design of Samsung’s Foldable Handheld Console

The design patent (via 91Mobiles) provides several illustrations of a handheld gaming console thought to have a foldable display. At first glance (Fig. 1), it seems to feature a clamshell-style foldable display with control elements on the left and right sides of the device. We can also observe the two panels folded together (Fig. 2) and the hinge (Fig. 3) accompanied by the shoulder buttons.

The document also includes illustrations depicting the right (Fig. 5) and left sides (Fig. 7) of the device, suggesting a sleek design. Figure 6 illustrates a top view, showcasing the thumb sticks, directional buttons, and what seem to be shoulder buttons at the top of the device.

The subsequent images (Fig. 9- Fig. 12) depict the gaming device with the display fully opened without any creases. A top-down view is presented in Fig. 13, clarifying the display’s state when fully extended. The following figure provides a view of the bottom portion of the console, which does not appear to contain any display elements.

The final illustration (Fig. 15) features the device with its display angled open. This seems to be the intended use for the handheld. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether the larger screen will display the same game, or if the lower half could serve as a secondary display for supplementary information.

Similar to the Flex Gaming Console concept, there is no update on whether Samsung intends to launch a device inspired by the designs depicted in this patent. The company currently markets Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold smartphones but has not yet indicated plans to venture into the foldable gaming handheld sector.
