Russia Unveils New Anti-Drone Laser Technology Amid Push for Enhanced Air Defense System

On Friday, the Russian government announced that it had conducted tests on new laser systems aimed at combating drones, which they plan to integrate into a broader national air defense strategy.

First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov joined officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, along with representatives from the state corporations Rostec and Rosatom, to observe the trials.

According to an official statement, «The main objective of these trials was to thoroughly evaluate the performance of the new laser technologies in conditions that closely resemble real-life situations.»

Officials noted that eight different laser systems were tested, including both portable units and high-powered stationary devices, engineered to target various types of drones, ranging from small reconnaissance to strike models.

A government-released video depicted a laser system engaging test drones at an undisclosed site, showing images of debris from the destroyed drones following the laser strikes.

«The successful completion of the tests clears the way for mass production and broader implementation,» the statement indicated.

On Thursday, President Putin convened a meeting to discuss the nation’s state armament program for the years 2027-2036, emphasizing the need for «new approaches and unconventional solutions» in countering drone threats.

Putin highlighted the importance of creating a «cohesive» and flexible air defense system within Russia.
