Russia Alleges Ukrainian Plot Behind Drone Incident in Romania

The Russian embassy in Romania asserted on Sunday that a drone incursion into the Eastern European nation the previous day was a «provocation» masterminded by Ukraine.

Romania’s Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that two of its fighter jets intercepted a drone within its airspace during Russian assaults on Ukraine.

According to the defense ministry, the drone did not fly over inhabited areas and did not endanger civilians.

On Sunday, Romania’s Foreign Ministry called in Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev to discuss the matter.

The Russian embassy dismissed claims that one of its drones had entered Romanian airspace, labeling it as a «deliberate provocation from the Kyiv regime.»

Additionally, it accused Bucharest authorities of not providing a «specific and credible response» to Moscow’s queries regarding the airspace breach.

Since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Romania has reported several instances of drones being downed within its borders.

The incident on Saturday occurred just days after Poland announced it had shot down multiple Russian drones that had intruded into its airspace during a significant air assault against Ukraine.

Both Romania and Poland are members of NATO.
