Qualcomm presented the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC on Thursday. This latest mobile platform takes over from the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and introduces select features from Snapdragon Elite Gaming. It utilizes TSMC’s advanced 4nm process technology and comes equipped with multiple AI functionalities. It is designed to support Gen AI assistants as well as well-known large language models (LLMs) running directly on the device. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC features a prime core operating at a clock speed of 2.8GHz, alongside connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. New devices powered by this chipset from Honor and Vivo are expected to launch later this month.

Qualcomm Introduces the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC represents a new mid-range chip built on TSMC’s 4nm process technology and supports a 64-bit architecture. It boasts a prime core capable of reaching speeds up to 2.8GHz, along with four performance cores running at 2.4GHz and three efficiency cores with a maximum frequency of 1.8GHz. The chip features an Adreno GPU and a Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP).

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC brings enhanced camera and gaming functionalities, along with sophisticated on-device AI capabilities driven by Qualcomm AI Engines. It claims to provide a 27 percent improvement in CPU performance and a 30 percent upgrade in GPU graphics rendering compared to its predecessor. Additionally, it reportedly offers a 65 percent boost in AI performance when compared to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 mobile platform, allowing for the direct operation of Gen AI assistants and popular LLMs on the device.

Similar to earlier Snapdragon chipsets, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 incorporates Snapdragon Sound technology, integrating Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology and Aqstic audio codec for versatile format playback. It also includes various Snapdragon Elite Gaming features such as Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, Triple ISP, and Snapdragon Adaptive Game Configuration.

Additional key features of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 involve the Hexagon NPU, which supports INT4, INT8, and INT16 precision, as well as the Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF system. The chipset is equipped with Qualcomm FastConnect Mobile Connectivity System for Wi-Fi 7, and is compatible with Wi-Fi 6/5 and Bluetooth 6.0. It supports LP-DDR5x RAM with speeds up to 4,200MHz and storage options including UFS 4.0, UFS 3.1, and UFS 2.

This new mobile chip, identified by the part number SM7750-AB, is confirmed to be adopted by Honor and Vivo. Handsets from these brands equipped with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chip are scheduled to enter the market later this month. The yet-to-be-announced Honor 400 is expected to be the first smartphone featuring the new chip.
