Putin Proposes UN-Supported Transitional Administration to Shape Ukraines Future

President Vladimir Putin stated late Thursday that Russian military forces possess a «strategic initiative» along the front lines in Ukraine, while also suggesting the formation of a «transitional» government in Kyiv under the jurisdiction of the United Nations.

«Our troops are in control of the strategic initiative across the entire front,» Putin remarked during his visit to the northern city of Murmansk. «There are grounds to believe we will be able to eliminate the remaining Ukrainian forces,» he continued.

«The Ukrainian population should comprehend the realities of the situation,» the Russian president noted.

Putin further proposed the concept of establishing a transitional government in Ukraine with UN support.

«We could certainly engage in discussions with the United States, as well as European nations, and of course with our partners and allies, about the option of creating a transitional administration in Ukraine under UN auspices,» he mentioned.

He argued that such an administration could «conduct a democratic presidential election» and aid in promoting peace negotiations, referencing the UN-led transition in East Timor in 1999 as a relevant example.

Putin’s comments were made following a summit in Paris where European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened to align their strategies regarding the war in Ukraine.

After the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France and Britain were proposing plans for a «reassurance force» in Ukraine once hostilities cease.

He clarified that members of this proposed force would not act as peacekeepers, would not be deployed to the front lines, nor would they serve as a substitute for the Ukrainian military.
