The team behind the Polygon network has launched a protocol update known as Madhugiri. This upgrade aims to boost the blockchain’s throughput by 33% and reduce block consensus time to one second.

According to Krishna Shah, the lead developer at Polygon, the hard fork incorporates support for three Ethereum Improvement Proposals: 7823, 7825, and 7883.

These adjustments enhance the efficiency and security of complex mathematical operations by limiting gas consumption. The mechanism helps prevent overloads of computational resources caused by individual «heavy» transactions.

The update introduces a new type of operation for the bridge between Ethereum and Polygon. The network architecture has been made more adaptable for future upgrades. Shah pointed out that blocks can now be announced in one second instead of two.

Moreover, Madhugiri strengthens the infrastructure for handling stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets.

Aishwarya Gupta, head of the payments division at Polygon Labs, believes these enhancements are essential for high-frequency operations. In an interview with The Fintech Times, he predicted a “supercycle of stablecoins.”

In November, Gupta forecasted the emergence of 100,000 stablecoins by 2029.

In July, Polygon implemented the Heimdall 2.0 hard fork, which shortened transaction finalization times. In September, the network experienced some disruptions, but the issue was promptly resolved with an update.

It is worth noting that in October, the Polygon Labs team activated the Rio update, which enhanced the mainnet’s performance to 5000 TPS.
