OpenAIs o1 Pro Surpasses GPT-4.5 as the Leading AI Model in Terms of Cost Efficiency

After its initial release at the end of 2024, OpenAI expanded access to o1 Pro beyond ChatGPT through its API interface.

The premium version of ChatGPT was introduced with a monthly subscription fee of $200, marking a significant increase from the standard plan priced at $20. According to OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, o1 Pro is the most advanced model in the world, specifically designed to tackle the most complex challenges.

This model exhibits superior performance compared to earlier versions in mathematical competitions, programming tests, and scientific research. Although OpenAI has moved on to o3, this successor model remains unavailable, with only its smaller version currently accessible.

When comparing API pricing, o1 Pro’s costs make GPT-4.5 appear more cost-effective: the input fee is $150 per million tokens, and the output fee is $600. In contrast, GPT-4.5 charges $75 and $150, while the standard o1 costs $15 and $60 for the same services.

OpenAI primarily markets its service to researchers, engineers, and professional users. Since the debut of o1, several competing models have emerged, including Claude 3.7 «Thinking» and Grok 3 «Thing».

Despite this competition, o1 continues to hold the third position in the rankings of AI-focused companies. A major advantage of o1 Pro is its enhanced computational power, which delivers more reliable and accurate results. This capability may make it the optimal choice for specific use cases, as no comparable offerings currently exist.
