OpenAI Unveils Interactive Study Mode in ChatGPT for Enhanced Learning

OpenAI has launched a dedicated learning mode for students in ChatGPT, designed to facilitate a step-by-step approach to tackling tasks rather than simply providing direct answers.

«Study Mode in ChatGPT was created as an interactive experience: it employs the Socratic method, along with gradual prompts, to guide users,» the announcement states.

This tool aims to foster critical thinking, as the chatbot engages students with clarifying questions to ensure their understanding of the material. In some instances, it refrains from offering straightforward answers unless the learner actively participates.

The mode is available to Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with plans to roll it out for Edu users within the coming weeks. It was developed in collaboration with educators and experts, marking «the first step toward enhancing the educational capabilities of ChatGPT.»

Chatbots are increasingly regarded as essential tools in education, although research indicates that they may diminish the development of critical thinking skills.

«Education is one of the key areas for AI development. Through the NextGenAI and SCALE initiatives at Stanford University, we are conducting long-term studies to gain a deeper understanding of how AI tools shape the future of learning,» OpenAI representatives noted.

In April, a similar feature called Learning Mode was introduced by Anthropic for their AI, Claude.

The decision to use Study Mode rests with the student, who can easily switch back to the standard mode for direct answers.

It’s worth mentioning that in July, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that personal conversations with ChatGPT are not legally protected. He noted that, if necessary, courts could request all information shared by users with the chatbot.
