North Koreas Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui Begins Three-Day Visit to Russia

North Korea’s Foreign Minister, Choe Son Hui, is scheduled to embark on a three-day visit to Russia starting Sunday, according to statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Her trip will be classified as a “working visit” taking place from Sunday through Tuesday, as noted in the announcement.

The Russian Ambassador, Alexander Matsegora, accompanied Choe to the airport, as reported by the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang. It was also mentioned that she intends to discuss matters of bilateral relations and international policy with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

Additionally, Choe is expected to travel to Belarus during this journey, as reported by North Korea’s state-run news agency, KCNA, although no further details have been provided.

The announcement indicates that Choe “will be visiting the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus at the invitation of the foreign ministries of both countries.”

This visit comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

U.S. media outlets have previously mentioned that officials within Trump’s administration have discreetly discussed the possibility of arranging a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with whom Trump last engaged in dialogue in 2019.

Trump has expressed his desire to reconnect with Kim, potentially within this year.

Recently, Kim had an encounter with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko during a military parade in Beijing last September, commemorating Japan’s surrender in World War II.

In recent years, the relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow has strengthened, highlighted by North Korea dispatching troops to assist Russia in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
