New Voice Mode Feature on the Horizon for Anthropics Claude Chatbot

Anthropic is said to be developing a voice chat feature for its proprietary AI chatbot, Claude. As per the report, the company aims to introduce the feature, referred to as ‘voice mode’, by the end of this month. While competitors like OpenAI and Google have already implemented dedicated voice functionalities in their chatbots, ChatGPT and Gemini, Anthropic has been concentrating solely on text-based interactions until now. This report emerges shortly after the AI company unveiled a fresh educational initiative, akin to OpenAI’s Edu subscription.

Claude’s Anticipated Voice Mode

A Bloomberg report indicates that the San Francisco-based AI organization is preparing to roll out the new voice mode. Citing an anonymous source knowledgeable about the situation, the article noted that the feature could launch as soon as April. It will initially be accessible to a select group of users, although these plans may be subject to change.

Anthropic is reportedly set to incorporate three distinct voice options in this feature, named Airy, Mellow, and Buttery, with Buttery featuring a British accent. Interestingly, the article points out that an app researcher known as “M1Astra” discovered this information within the code of Claude’s iOS application and shared it with the news outlet. Further details remain undisclosed at this time.

While the report discusses the voice mode, it is uncertain whether this will simply be a text-to-speech capability or if the AI-generated voice will resemble human speech, similar to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. Additionally, it is unclear if the feature will be available to the general public or restricted to paid subscribers. The three voices are expected to vary in pitch, timbre, and overall sound quality.

Anthropic appears to be entering the voice chatbot scene later than its peers. Over the past year, prominent AI-driven companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and even Apple have launched or announced voice-based conversation functionalities. Meta is also rumored to be working on a bi-directional voice chat feature for Meta AI.

Nonetheless, Anthropic has been proactive, introducing several new features throughout 2025. Last month, the organization’s researchers published a paper that made strides in the understanding of AI models’ thinking processes. The company also integrated a web search capability into Claude and introduced the Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model featuring advanced reasoning abilities.
