Launch of Basis SDN: A Groundbreaking Solution for Software-Defined Networks in Russia

Today, we unveiled Basis SDN, an independent Russian solution for establishing software-defined networking (SDN). The development of this product was a collaborative effort between two companies, Basis and Angie Software; a joint team of over a hundred engineers, architects, and developers worked on it for more than two years. As a result, the market now has an SDN solution that has the potential to compete on equal footing with global counterparts.

During the planning phase of Basis SDN, we focused on the leading global products that were effectively shaping the Russian SDN market at that time. Currently, Basis SDN features the essential and most in-demand functionalities expected by the market. By the first quarter of 2026, the product’s capabilities will be significantly enhanced based on the feedback from early clients and pilot implementations set to begin in the summer.

Centralized Management

We provide a unified access point for managing, configuring, and monitoring the virtual network infrastructure. Administrators gain a comprehensive view of the network’s status and can swiftly respond to any changes.

Support for Complex Topologies

The solution supports multi-tenancy, allows for the creation of complex management scenarios, and is designed for specific tasks, accommodating both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic.

Comprehensive Security Management

Users can establish and apply security rules for the entire virtual environment or for specific groups of objects, network interfaces of VMs, and IP address pools. The segmentation of the virtual infrastructure enables the isolation of vulnerable or targeted areas, while the role-based access control model mitigates internal risks.

Compatibility and Support

Basis SDN is compatible with leading Russian operating systems such as Astra Linux and «Alt,» as well as with hardware from major domestic manufacturers like YADRO, Aquarius, OpenYard, «Bifork,» and BST.

The solution integrates with our flagship product, Basis Dynamix, but is also functional in other virtual environments built on the open-source KVM hypervisor.

Analysts indicate that the SDN segment in the Russian market currently exceeds 15 billion rubles and is projected to more than double to 32 billion rubles by 2031. Despite the exit of foreign companies in 2022, the share of domestic solutions in the SDN market is only a couple of percent. Why is this the case? Some vendors offer SDN as part of another product, so it’s not an independent solution but an add-on to a virtualization platform. Others enhance open-source solutions but find that they meet the needs of large businesses—according to the clients’ own assessments—only about 60-70%. The cost of enhancing and launching a product to market is quite high.

Another issue is the shortage of expertise. There are few specialists in networking technologies in Russia, and they are expensive. To implement a fully functional SDN, a world-class team is needed, as competition will be at that level. Therefore, we ultimately joined forces with the Angie team, which brings both experience and expertise. We will share more about our collaboration and its outcomes on Habr.

What is crucial for us is that with this new product, our ecosystem meets 100% of customer needs in managing dynamic IT infrastructure. Our portfolio now includes server virtualization, a cloud platform, software-defined storage, and our own SDN solution—all foundational elements of a modern data center. This is the result we have been striving for over the past several years, and it is what our clients have been anticipating.
