Krasnoyarsk Implements New Restrictions on Alcohol Sales Amid Growing National Efforts

The Krasnoyarsk region in Siberia announced on Tuesday its intention to restrict the sale of alcohol, aligning itself with a growing number of regions nationwide that are implementing stricter measures to reduce alcohol consumption.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Krasnoyarsk stated that liquor stores situated in residential areas must limit their operating hours starting March 1. Additionally, restaurants will require special permits to serve alcohol in outdoor dining areas.

Moreover, the sale of alcohol will be prohibited across the region on June 1, coinciding with International Children’s Day, and on September 1, marking the beginning of the new school year.

Although federal law in Russia already prohibits alcohol sales from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., the Krasnoyarsk ministry indicated that future regulations will confine alcohol sales in residential zones to the hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In December, the Governor of Krasnoyarsk, Mikhail Kotyukov, prohibited the sale of alcohol near locations hosting public holiday events, such as the Victory Day festivities in May.

Krasnoyarsk is following the lead of several other regions in the Far East and northwestern Russia in limiting alcohol sales as part of efforts to address alcohol-related problems.
