Introducing the Volvo ES90: A Game-Changing EV with Ultra-Fast 800-Volt Charging and SUV-Like Versatility

Volvo has formally unveiled the ES90, an all-electric iteration of its S60 sedan. Although it falls under the sedan category, Volvo describes it as providing the «versatility of a fastback, alongside the roomy cabin and elevated ground clearance typical of SUVs.» This marks Volvo’s first electric vehicle to utilize an 800-volt architecture, which is designed to enhance charging efficiency. The implementation of lightweight components in Volvo’s 800-volt system may also contribute to increased driving range and improved acceleration.

Regarding the ES90, Volvo claims a travel distance of 700 kilometers, or 435 miles, although the official EPA figures may indicate a shorter range. When connected to a 350 kW rapid charger, the vehicle can recharge to deliver 300 kilometers (186 miles) of additional range in just 10 minutes, and its 106 kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in only 20 minutes. All variants of the vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 112 mph, but the Twin Motor Performance (AWD) variant offers the quickest acceleration, reaching 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

The ES90 utilizes the Volvo Cars Superset technology foundation, similar to the EX90 SUV. This unified hardware and software setup will underpin all of Volvo’s electric models, enabling simultaneous over-the-air updates for the complete lineup of EVs when necessary. Notably, the ES90 stands out as the first Volvo vehicle operating on a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin setup, which the company’s chief technology officer claims makes it the «most powerful car [Volvo has] ever built concerning fundamental computing power.»

Volvo has equipped the ES90 with a slightly elevated stance and its iconic Thor’s Hammer headlight design, along with newly designed C-shaped LED tail lights. The vehicle is fitted with a comprehensive array of sensors, which includes one lidar, five radar units, seven cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors to enhance its active safety systems that assist drivers in preventing collisions and other dangers. Inside, the three rear seats can be independently folded down to increase cargo space. Additionally, the panoramic roof offers 99.9 percent UV protection, with an optional electrochromic version that allows owners to darken the glass and minimize glare at the touch of a button. The infotainment system is accessed via a 14.5-inch central display, featuring built-in Google applications such as Maps and Assistant.

Potential buyers can now place orders for the ES90 in various countries, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Volvo plans to expand its availability to more regions later this year and into 2026.
