Hytales Troubled Revival: Developer Simon Collins-Laflamme Expresses Fury Over Games Condition Post-Riot Purchase

The beleaguered sandbox game Hytale has been granted a fresh start, set for November 2025. This opportunity arose when one of the project’s creators, Simon Collins-Laflamme, acquired the game from Riot Games and regained control over its development. However, beneath this seemingly happy conclusion lay far more challenges than anticipated.

According to Collins-Laflamme, the state of Hytale after years under Riot‘s oversight evoked frustration rather than joy.

Upon regaining access to the project, Hytale could barely function. The camera, movement, combat system, crafting, building mechanics, gameplay loop, sound, and rendering were all misfiring or completely inoperative. Collins-Laflamme described it as a miracle that the team managed to bring the game to a playable and, crucially, engaging state in just a few weeks.

Nevertheless, there was no time for celebration. The developers resolved to maintain their accelerated pace of work to make up for lost years. Collins-Laflamme himself invested more money, time, and personal resources than initially planned to ensure the project reached an acceptable standard.

He is, however, deliberately tempering audience expectations. By the end of 2025, the creator of Hytale presented 16 minutes of “raw and broken” gameplay and candidly admitted that the current build is far from perfect. For that reason, early access will cost just $20—a price that Collins-Laflamme has intentionally set low.

The secret to the swift progress, according to the developer, is straightforward: minimal meetings, trust in the team, and a focus on results. Technical debts will be addressed at a later stage, as the primary goal now is to implement functional features and keep moving forward.

Remember, players will have the chance to experience the resurrected Hytale starting January 13 on PC. The game will be available exclusively through a special launcher, with no plans for a Steam release at launch.
