Hope Springs Eternal: John Romero Eyes Revival of His Canceled Shooter

The legendary developer **John Romero**, known for creating **Doom** and **Quake**, announced that he still hopes to revive his mysterious shooter, which was canceled by **Microsoft** earlier this year.

In the summer, **Romero Games** reported that they had lost their publisher and funding for their unannounced project. Following this announcement, there were reports suggesting that the entire team was left jobless. However, **Romero** quickly dispelled rumors about the studio’s closure and assured that the project could still have a second chance.

In a recent interview with **Game Reactor**, **Romero** confirmed that the game is not dead.

According to him, several companies have already expressed interest in collaborating. Over the years, approximately $50 million has been invested in the project, and potential partners realize they would gain access to a vast amount of ready-made content at nearly no cost. Even if the game cannot be restored to its original form, the assets developed may serve as the foundation for a new title.

When **Microsoft** pulled out of the publishing agreement, the game was about halfway through development. One of the employees at **Romero Games** described the decision as a «huge shock» in a conversation with **The Journal**, adding that «no one expected this turn of events»—literally just a day earlier, the studio had been in discussions with the publisher and had received no warnings.
