Google Unveils Next-Gen AI Mode for Search, Enhancing User Experience with Gemini 2.0 Technology

Google Search has introduced an updated AI feature known as AI Mode as of Wednesday. The tech company located in Mountain View was reportedly trialing this functionality internally during the previous month, and it is now being made available to a limited audience. AI Mode is designed to provide insights on intricate subjects and multifaceted search inquiries that typically require multiple searches for information. Moreover, the company is enhancing AI Overviews with the Gemini 2.0 model, which is presently accessible only in the United States.

AI Mode Launches in Google Search

In a blog entry, the tech firm elaborated on the new AI Mode feature for Google Search. It is reported that this latest interface will feature “enhanced reasoning, cognitive capabilities, and multimodal functions,” functioning as an extension of the current AI Overviews.

At the moment, AI Mode can be accessed by a select group of users through Google Labs as part of an early trial. The company has also announced plans to begin inviting Google One AI Premium subscribers to experience this feature in Labs. However, there is no information available regarding its release for general Google Search users.

Eligible users opting into the AI Mode will see it as a filter within the search results interface. This filter appears first, followed by All, Images, News, Maps, and additional categories. Consequently, after conducting a standard search on Google, users can easily switch to AI Mode by selecting the filter.

Google stated that AI Mode is powered by a specialized Gemini 2.0 model, making it valuable for inquiries that demand deeper analysis, comparisons, or logical reasoning. The feature allows users to pose follow-up questions and presents multimodal output, including images, tables, and additional resources. It also provides links to websites that can assist users in obtaining further information.

This AI system employs a “query fan-out” method to execute numerous related searches at once across various sub-topics, and it taps into multiple data sources to deliver comprehensive outcomes in an “easily digestible format,” according to the company. Some of the data sources utilized by AI Mode incorporate web content, knowledge graph, shopping information, and general world data.

According to the company, AI Mode incorporates innovative strategies to enhance the accuracy of its responses. Nevertheless, Google has acknowledged that some responses may exhibit specific biases. Users who have access to the feature are encouraged to share feedback to assist the company in refining the tool. Additionally, the tech giant emphasized that AI Mode will only display web search results in contexts where it lacks high confidence in the relevance and quality.

AI Overviews Enhanced with New AI Technology

Google is also revamping its AI Overviews capability within Search, which offers concise summaries of search results. This feature will now utilize the Gemini 2.0 model and is capable of addressing more complex inquiries related to coding, advanced mathematics, and multimodal questions. The updated AI Overviews are currently available in the US.

Moreover, the company is expanding access to this product for more users. AI Overviews will also be accessible to teenagers using their teen accounts. These AI-generated summaries will also appear for users who are not logged into their Google accounts.
