Google Redefines Midrange with Sleek Pixel 9a Launch at $499

After a plethora of leaks, Google has officially introduced its Pixel 9a smartphone, priced at $499. One of the most significant updates in this new A-series device is its design, which features the elimination of the camera bar on the back. The camera layout now boasts a «slightly domed» housing that aligns almost seamlessly with the phone’s body, contributing to a more refined look for this midrange device. Additionally, there are fresh color choices for this series: a light purple labeled Iris and a lively pink called Peony, alongside the standard Porcelain and Obsidian shades. (The Peony option resembles that found on the more expensive Pixel 9.)

Senior reviewer Sam Rutherford has had the chance to experience the new device firsthand, explaining why he believes the Pixel 9a could be labeled as «the new midrange smartphone king.» However, let’s delve into the specifics before you check out his thoughts.

Furthermore, beyond what has been mentioned, the Pixel 9a will feature an upgraded chip, transitioning to Google’s Tensor G4 processor from the G3 found in the impressive Pixel 8a. The performance was already commendable with the 8a, so anticipate even more fluid operation with the G4. Similar to its predecessor, the 9a comes with 8GB of RAM and offers either 128GB or 256GB of storage. The latest A-series also claims a battery life of up to «30+ hours.»

The cameras played a key role in our fondness for the Pixel 8a, earning it the title of our top recommendation for a midrange smartphone. The camera assembly in the 9a undergoes some changes, featuring distinct internal specifications. The rear dual cameras offer a 48MP wide and a 13MP ultrawide lens, while the front has a 13MP selfie camera; compared to the 8a, which had a 64MP wide rear camera. AI-enhanced functionalities like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Best Take, and Photo Unblur are supported. For the first time in the A-series, Google introduces the Macro Focus feature for capturing intricate close-up images, along with Night Sight to enhance low-light photography.

It’s important to mention that following the announcement, Ars Technica has indicated that due to the Pixel 9a being equipped with only 8GB of RAM, it is «obliged» to use a «super small» version of Gemini AI. The article also highlights that this entails «some of Google’s most innovative AI features being unavailable on the 9a.» Nevertheless, Ars confirms that options like AI-generated transcripts via the Recorder app will still function on the 9a. Once we obtain a review unit, we’ll ascertain precisely what features are operational and what has been omitted compared to the more robust (and pricier) Pixel 9 and 9 Pro.

The 9a will be launched in the US and Canada, along with multiple other countries across Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Google states that the device is set for release in April, without further specifics on timing.
