Google Phasing Out Assistant in Favor of Advanced Gemini System

On Friday, Google announced that it will be replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices later this year. The company revealed on its blog that it plans to transition more users from Google Assistant to Gemini in the coming months. By the end of the year, Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices and app stores.

Additionally, the company stated, “We will also update tablets, cars, and phone-connected devices, such as headphones and smartwatches, to Gemini.” They further mentioned that new Gemini-based experiences will be introduced for home devices, including speakers, displays, and televisions.

Google indicated that more detailed information will be provided to users in the upcoming months, and until then, Assistant will continue to function on the aforementioned devices.

The tech giant has emphasized that it has been focused on enhancing the Gemini user experience prior to phasing out Assistant, particularly for users who rely on various Assistant features. For example, several popular functionalities have been added to Gemini on Android devices, including music playback, timer support, and the ability to perform actions directly from the user’s lock screen.

The shift from Assistant to Gemini isn’t surprising, especially considering that Google recently launched its Pixel 9 smartphone series with Gemini as the default virtual assistant. Google notes that Gemini has more advanced capabilities than Assistant (at least in theory) and offers new ways to access help and information on various topics through tools like [Gemini Live](https://techcrunch.com/2024/08/13/gemini-live-googles-answer-to-chatgpts-advanced-voice-mode-launches/) and [Deep Research](https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/11/gemini-can-now-research-deeper/).
