Glitch Platform Announces Closure of App Hosting Services by July 2025

The platform Glitch («a friendly community where you can build your dream application»), which allows developers to share their solutions and rework projects, will soon discontinue its primary function of hosting applications online. Glitch’s CEO, Anil Dash, announced that the platform will cease project hosting and close user profiles on July 8, 2025. The team is currently not planning to shut down entirely and is exploring alternatives.

Glitch users will be able to access their dashboards and download their project code until the end of 2025. Additionally, Glitch’s administration is developing a new feature that will allow users to redirect their project subdomains. The platform has stopped accepting new Pro subscriptions but will continue to support existing subscriptions until July 8, 2025.

Glitch was designed to make development accessible to a broad audience and minimize «setup work.» The philosophy behind this service was that «creating an application should be as simple as editing a blog post or altering a formula in a spreadsheet.» The aim of the project was to create an environment for both professional and novice developers that facilitates easy collaboration. Glitch supports importing and exporting projects from GitHub, notably allowing users to place a special button right on the GitHub project page, enabling new users to launch it on Glitch with a single click.

Without its key features, it’s uncertain what will remain of Glitch. The dashboard, application redirection, and code upload tools are the only user functionalities confirmed to remain available on the platform after July 8.

Anil Dash launched Glitch in 2017 under Fog Creek Software, but in 2022, it was acquired by cloud services provider Fastly. In a blog post announcing the changes, Dash stated that the time and resources required to host applications have «increased significantly as the platform has become outdated, and malicious actors are trying to misuse it.» Dash added that the project team is “still figuring out what potential plans might be possible for Glitch and its community in the future.”
