Elden Ring Shatters Records: 30 Million Copies Sold in Just 3 Years, With New Spinoff on the Horizon

Elden Ring, the revolutionary action-RPG launched in 2022, has achieved 30 million copies sold, as announced by developer FromSoftware on Monday. This sales landmark was reached three years post-launch, indicating the game’s continued popularity. Elden Ring is the top-selling title from the Japanese developer, who is currently busy creating a spinoff called Elden Ring Nightreign.

Elden Ring Sales Reach 30 Million

FromSoftware shared the news of Elden Ring selling 30 million units in a post on X on Monday, expressing gratitude to the players journeying through the Lands Between. “Dearest Tarnished, we are immensely grateful for your unwavering dedication. May your journey always be illuminated by the Grace of Gold,” the official Elden Ring account stated in the announcement.

Elden Ring achieved the remarkable milestone of 30 million sales slightly over three years after its release in February 2022. The last five million units were sold within the last 10 months, demonstrating the action-RPG’s strong performance even years after its debut. It reached 25 million units sold in June 2024, just before the launch of its first major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.

This expansion, which introduced new narrative content, an additional map area, fresh enemies, and new boss battles, received widespread acclaim upon release and became the highest rated expansion ever according to Metacritic. Shadow of the Erdtree was also notably nominated for the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024, though it ultimately lost to Astro Bot. Following its release, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree quickly sold an impressive five million copies globally within just three days, and it likely has continued to sell strongly since then.

The Future of Elden Ring

Elden Ring stands as the most lucrative franchise for developer FromSoftware, significantly outpacing Dark Souls 3 (released in 2016) and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), both of which sold over 10 million copies. In fact, Elden Ring has now eclipsed the combined sales figures of the entire Dark Souls series, which has shipped over 27 million copies across three games.

However, FromSoftware has no plans for a sequel to its flagship title at this moment, despite having several other projects underway. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware and the director of Elden Ring, mentioned in December 2024 that the focus was on different endeavors. “We do not have specific plans for an Elden Ring 2,” he remarked at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event. Nevertheless, he did indicate that they are not dismissing the possibility of future developments in the Elden Ring universe. “I want to express that we are not ruling out the potential for ‘Elden Ring’ to evolve in some capacity in the future,” Miyazaki noted.

Shortly afterward, however, FromSoftware unveiled Elden Ring Nightreign, a spinoff multiplayer cooperative action-survival game, during The Game Awards 2025. The release date is set for May 30 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
