Drone Strike Near Sochi Leaves Two Women Dead and Several Injured

Two women lost their lives in a Ukrainian drone strike close to the resort city of Sochi in southern Russia, according to local authorities on Thursday morning.

Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, reported that debris from a downed drone landed in Adler, situated just south of Sochi, after being intercepted by Russian air defense. The fatalities occurred on Aviatsionnaya Street, he noted.

“Remnants of the drone also fell on the premises of an oil storage facility,” Kondratyev shared on Telegram. The location of the crash is in close proximity to the Olympic Park, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 2014, and near the Vitaliy Sevastyanov Airport in Sochi.

The governor stated that eleven individuals sustained injuries in the attack, including a traffic police officer who was airlifted to a hospital in the region. Four people were admitted for treatment, while the others received care on an outpatient basis.

“I have directed Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin to extend assistance to the families of the victims and to those injured,” the governor added.

In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry indicated that air defense systems intercepted seven Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar region during the night, along with nearly twenty others over the Black and Azov seas.
