This installment serves as a prequel to the 2016 DOOM, featuring a protagonist who can obliterate demons and enemies while riding a dragon, in addition to wielding handheld, energy, and heavy weapons. Players will also have the opportunity to pilot a massive mech to battle equally large demons.

The game’s narrative is set in the past, revealing the backstory of the main character. The executioner Roca dons medieval armor and wields a shield for both offense and defense.

Previously, the developers explained that the game is powered by the new idTech8 engine, which «sets new benchmarks for visual quality and performance.» One of the highlights of this entry is a customizable difficulty system, allowing players to determine the challenge level, the damage inflicted by enemies, and other game parameters.

The shooter features dynamic interactive lighting and ray-traced shadows, improved graphics over its predecessors, along with increased bloodshed and destruction. The developers of DOOM: The Dark Ages also opted to forgo multiplayer in order to concentrate fully on the campaign.

The original DOOM, developed by id Software in collaboration with Certain Affinity and published by Bethesda Softworks, was released in 2016, followed by DOOM Eternal in 2020.
