Dogecoin Set to Evolve with ZK-Proofs for Advanced Applications

The developers of DogeOS have proposed to implement support for Dogecoin for zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs). The OP_CHECKZKP initiative aims to transform the blockchain from a mere payment system into a platform for DeFi, gaming, and other on-chain applications.

The DogeOS team is actively enhancing the MyDoge wallet, which currently has over 500,000 users.

This upgrade will facilitate the verification of computations off the main network while maintaining confidentiality. According to a press release, the initiative will pave the way for the creation of lending markets backed by DOGE, decentralized exchanges, and verifiable multiplayer games.

Technically, the proposal introduces a new opcode OP_CHECKZKP that supports Groth16 and PLONK proof systems. The upgrade is set to be implemented through a soft fork, ensuring backward compatibility without the need to create a new virtual machine.

The ZK-Rollups technology will allow thousands of transactions to be processed per second off-chain, which can then be validated on the main blockchain using “compact” cryptographic proofs.

«Dogecoin already boasts one of the most dedicated communities. This upgrade will provide them with the tools to do more — transforming their beloved currency into a platform capable of competing with any other network,» stated DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson.

The DogeOS team is also working on an EVM-compatible zkVM, which will utilize Dogecoin for its operations. The OP_CHECKZKP upgrade will ensure these calculations are secure and verifiable. Additionally, it will create opportunities for private transactions and establish bridges for DOGE across different networks.

As a reminder, on July 17, the mining company Bit Origin, listed on Nasdaq, announced a strategy to replenish its reserves in DOGE by $500 million.
