Crash Involving Eight Drivers Shakes NASCAR Street Race in Chicago

A race known as the Grant Park 165 took place on the streets of Chicago, marking the 19th event of the regular season for the NASCAR Cup Series. The race got off to a chaotic start, with an incident on the third lap caused by Carson Hocevar from Spire Motorsports.

Hocevar made a mistake at turn 10, smashing sideways into the barrier, which led him to lose control of his vehicle and block part of the track. Several drivers caught in heavy traffic behind him crashed into Hocevar’s car, including Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski, Daniel Suárez, A.J. Allmendinger, Todd Gilliland, Riley Herbst, and Australian Supercars driver Will Brown.

The race was won by Shane van Gisbergen of Trackhouse Racing. The New Zealander, a three-time Supercars champion, celebrated his third victory in the NASCAR Cup Series. Earlier in 2023, he secured the inaugural race win in Chicago during his debut in stock car racing, and just a couple of weeks ago, he triumphed at the Rodríguez Brothers Autodrome, which also hosts the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix.
