Civilian Casualty in Kursk Region: Woman Succumbs to Drone Attack Injuries

A woman residing close to the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region of southwestern Russia passed away in the hospital a day after sustaining injuries from a Ukrainian drone strike, as reported by regional officials on Tuesday.

Acting Governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, announced late Monday that the 48-year-old woman was milking a cow in the village of Goncharovka when she suffered shrapnel injuries and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Khinshtein did not clarify whether the drone was shot down by Russian air defense systems before crashing.

Goncharovka, located 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, is a suburb of the city of Sudzha.

Khinshtein indicated that the woman succumbed to her injuries at the Kursk Regional Hospital later that night. «The medical team did everything possible, but sadly, the injuries were too severe,» he stated on Telegram.

Since President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine over three years ago, cross-border attacks in border regions of both Russia and Ukraine have frequently resulted in casualties.

Authorities report that more than 600 Russian civilians have lost their lives due to Ukrainian attacks within Russia and annexed Crimea since February 2022. Nearly half of these fatalities occurred during Ukraine’s nine-month partial occupation of the Kursk region, Khinshtein mentioned in late April after Moscow declared the region fully liberated from Ukrainian forces.
