Belarusian Authorities Refute Claims of Police Brutality Against Russian Comedian Ostanin

The Interior Ministry of Belarus rejected claims on Friday that its law enforcement personnel used violence when apprehending Russian stand-up comedian Artemyi Ostanin earlier this week.

On Thursday, a member of Russia’s presidential human rights council stated that Ostanin was struck with batons prior to his transfer to Russia, providing an image that displayed bruises and welts on his back. Medical professionals later diagnosed him with a fractured spine, respiratory issues, and various bruises and abrasions.

Ostanin, who could face up to six years in prison in Russia if found guilty of inciting hatred, has requested an official inquiry into his alleged abuse. A court in Moscow has placed him in pre-trial detention until May 15 due to a viral joke that triggered criticism from pro-war Russian bloggers.

«No physical force or any illegal methods were applied to this individual during his apprehension, transportation, and handover,» stated Gennady Kazakevich, Belarus’ Deputy Interior Minister, in a statement released on the ministry’s website.

Kazakevich noted that Ostanin was detained at Minsk Airport on Monday at the request of Moscow. Belarusian authorities then expelled the comedian and transferred him to Russian officials at the border.

Kazakevich affirmed that Belarusian law enforcement had «fully adhered to national laws.»

Nevertheless, Ostanin asserts that Russian authorities did not employ any physical force following his transfer.

The Interior Ministry of Belarus cautioned that individuals who slander its staff could face legal consequences.
