Battlefields Upcoming Game: Breaking Class-Specific Weapon Restrictions Sparks Mixed Reactions

A new post from the official Battlefield account has confirmed that the next installment in the series will not feature weapon restrictions for classes.

The upcoming Battlefield brings a radical change to the traditional class system, allowing any soldier access to all weapons while special gadgets and grenades remain exclusive to their respective roles. This approach resembles that of Battlefield 2042, but introduces a new bonus system designed to recapture the essence of classic Battlefield while providing players with maximum freedom of choice.

The foundation of this new system is built upon two main components:

Players are allowed to mix and match any weapons and most grenades or gadgets across all four classes (Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon). Previously, for instance, sniper rifles were restricted to Recon class, and heavy machine guns were exclusive to Support. Now, however, every player can select the tools that best fit their style without being limited by their team role.

To maintain the uniqueness of each role, the developers have introduced special bonuses for the classes:

Marksman rifles, carbines, and shotguns will not have any specific bonuses.

According to DICE, this new strategy aims to «create a system of interconnected systems and foundations that define a player’s role on the battlefield, while allowing for freedom in how that role is executed.” In testing sessions for Battlefield Labs, the developers are gathering feedback to find a balance between «clearly defined roles and player choices.»

The announcement regarding complete freedom of weapon choice has elicited mixed reactions from series veterans. Many have expressed a desire to return to «traditional restrictions» that ensure each class retains its uniqueness.

Supporters of a more flexible approach, on the other hand, believe it will attract a new audience weary of the stringent limitations of earlier titles. They argue that traditional weapon restrictions often hindered experimentation and slowed down team dynamics.

Should feedback during testing indicate that the community remains dissatisfied with the new system, DICE has left room for adjustments — the series has previously modified the balance between freedom and «defined roles» throughout its history.

Currently, the new Battlefield is in active testing as part of the Battlefield Labs program. There is no official release date yet for the project. The game is set to be showcased in summer 2025, with a launch planned within the current fiscal year—by March 31, 2026.
