AT&T to Discontinue Email-to-SMS and SMS-to-Email Services Starting June 2025

Starting June 17, 2025, the American telecommunications company will discontinue its support for converting emails into SMS/MMS and vice versa. This announcement was made by AT&T.

The change will impact all AT&T Wireless customers, including those using FirstNet, Business, and Cricket Wireless.

This feature enables subscribers to send text messages through email as well as receive emails as text messages when connected to the network. To send an SMS to an email address, one needs to input the AT&T phone number without punctuation followed by “@txt.att.net,” or “@mms.att.net” for sending images or videos. The same principle applies to sending SMS from an email. This can be a great option for individuals without a mobile phone or SMS plan. It also serves as a convenient way to reach someone in case of an emergency.

AT&T is likely discontinuing this feature due to low demand. It remains unclear whether other major mobile operators in the U.S. will follow suit; meanwhile, T-Mobile and Verizon still offer this service, as noted by Android Police.

In 2022, AT&T announced the shutdown of its 3G networks, making it the first company in the U.S. to phase out the outdated technology as it transitions to 5G.

In 2024, AT&T launched a trial program that allows users to test the operator’s network without switching to its services, all while keeping their current phone numbers.
