Athens State Orchestra Withdraws Support for Kremlin-Backed Pianist Matsuev Amid Global Tensions

The Athens State Orchestra announced on Monday that it has canceled a scheduled performance by Russian pianist Denis Matsuev.

«In its long history, the Orchestra has prioritized artistic excellence and the principles of open dialogue and respect that are central to the European cultural community,» the orchestra stated. «In light of the recent international developments, it has decided to modify its programming.»

Another pianist will take Matsuev’s place for the performance on November 21, with further information to be provided later.

Matsuev, a well-known pianist who has expressed support for President Vladimir Putin and his government’s policies regarding Ukraine, has not appeared in the West since Russia initiated its large-scale invasion in 2022.

In 2018, Putin honored him with the Order of Honor for his contributions to Russian culture and the arts.

This isn’t the first incident where a Russian artist aligned with Moscow’s stance has faced concert cancellations in Europe. In July, the Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy canceled a concert by conductor Valery Gergiev due to public backlash and concerns that his participation could be seen as promoting Kremlin propaganda.
