Athens State Orchestra Shifts Gears Amidst Controversy, Cancelling Concert of Pro-Kremlin Pianist

The Athens State Orchestra has announced the cancellation of a scheduled performance by Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, as stated in a release on Monday.

«Over the years, the Orchestra has committed to artistic excellence and to the principles of open dialogue and respect that are hallmarks of the European cultural landscape,» the statement read. «In light of the recent international developments, it has decided to modify its programming.»

Matsuev will be substituted by another pianist for the concert on November 21, with further details to be provided later.

Matsuev, a well-known pianist recognized for his support of President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s policies, including those regarding Ukraine, has not performed in Western countries since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion in 2022.

In 2018, Putin honored him with the Order of Honor for his contributions to Russian culture and the arts.

This is not the first instance of a Russian artist, aligned with Moscow’s views, having concerts canceled in Europe.

In July, the Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy axed a performance by conductor Valery Gergiev following public backlash and concerns that his participation could be seen as a means of promoting Kremlin propaganda.
