Athens State Orchestra Axes Concert by Kremlin-Supporting Pianist Amid Political Backlash

The Athens State Orchestra has announced the cancellation of an upcoming concert featuring Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, according to a statement released on Monday.

“The Orchestra has consistently upheld a commitment to artistic excellence, as well as the principles of open dialogue and mutual respect that characterize the European cultural sphere,” the organization stated. “In light of the recent international developments, it has decided to modify its programming accordingly.”

Another pianist will take Matsuev’s place for the performance scheduled on November 21, with further details to follow.

Matsuev, a well-known pianist recognized for his backing of President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s policies, particularly regarding Ukraine, has not performed in Western venues since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

In 2018, he was awarded the Order of Honor by Putin for his contributions to Russian culture and the arts.

This is not the first instance where a Russian artist who supports Moscow’s stance has faced concert cancellations in Europe.

In July, the Royal Palace of Caserta in Italy cancelled a concert by conductor Valery Gergiev following public backlash and concerns that his performance could be used as a platform for Kremlin propaganda.
