Apples AirPods Set to Innovate with Built-in Camera in 2024, but Expect No Major Updates Until 2026

Apple is reportedly planning to refrain from making any notable enhancements to the AirPods until 2026. The company updated its AirPods collection last year with the launch of AirPods 4, which finally introduced active noise cancellation (ANC) to the standard true wireless earbuds. However, the narrative for this year could differ. In the coming year, the iPhone manufacturer is expected to unveil a new model featuring an integrated infrared (IR) camera.

AirPods Enhancements

In a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter), TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed insights regarding Apple’s plans for the AirPods series. He noted that there will likely be no ‘major’ updates to the TWS earbuds until 2026. Additionally, AirPods Max could also see an update in the upcoming years.

Kuo indicated that Apple is working on a lighter variant of the AirPods Max, which might reach mass production by 2027.

Besides the improvements to current models, the tech giant from Cupertino is also anticipated to launch a new product — AirPods featuring integrated IR cameras. Kuo stated that this new device may start mass production next year, supporting earlier reports suggesting that the company was creating AirPods and Apple Watch versions equipped with cameras that function similarly to smart glasses.

The analyst had previously mentioned that the IR cameras could enhance the auditory experience. By detecting variations in the environment, the AirPods might enable a wider range of gestures. The embedded camera in the TWS earbuds is expected to facilitate “in-air gesture” control, and the device may also recognize hand movements.

Furthermore, the forthcoming AirPods are likely to offer an enhanced spatial audio experience in conjunction with Apple’s Vision Pro spatial headset. For instance, if a user tilts their head in a certain direction, the spatial sound emanating from that angle could be amplified, creating a more immersive auditory experience.
