Apple Unveils New MacBook Air 15-Inch: A Lightweight Giant for Portable Power Users

The Apple Vision Pro undeniably dominated the headlines at WWDC 2023, but there were additional announcements, including updates to the Mac lineup. One noteworthy release is the newly introduced 15-inch MacBook Air, which is priced at Rs. 1,34,900 in India and comes in four color choices: Midnight, Silver, Space Grey, and Starlight. It shares many specifications with the mid-2022 MacBook Air, featuring an M2 processor and up to 512GB of SSD storage.

I had the opportunity to experience the new MacBook Air at WWDC 2023, and it is noticeably larger than the MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2, 2022). Nevertheless, it retains the recognizable Air design language, and Apple claims it to be the thinnest 15-inch laptop globally. This model is designed for users seeking portability and convenience in a slightly larger screen format.

MacBook Air 15-inch initial impressions: large in size, yet lightweight

In many respects, the MacBook Air 15-inch mirrors the 13-inch M2 model released in 2022; the selection between the two primarily hinges on your preferences for size and portability.

Your choice naturally depends on the type of tasks you plan to perform on your laptop. For most everyday tasks, the 13-inch model may be more suitable and adequately powerful. However, the 15-inch model could be beneficial for tasks involving photo or graphic editing, as it offers more screen real estate for multitasking.

Having used an older MacBook Air for some time, I find myself leaning towards the 13.6-inch display for my next upgrade. The 13-inch model is now priced at Rs. 1,14,900 in India—slightly less than its original launch price—so it’s worth considering for the savings.

MacBook Air 15-inch initial impressions: concluding thoughts

The 15.3-inch display on the new MacBook Air provides a significant advantage—there’s no need to purchase the pricier and more powerful MacBook Pro 16-inch if a larger screen is all you seek. The new MacBook Air is well-equipped to handle the typical computing demands of most users, and the 256GB storage should be sufficient for many cases.

That said, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip is still my top choice as the perfect entry-level model within the MacBook family, as well as the optimal upgrade for long-time MacBook Air enthusiasts like myself. Other than the increased screen size, there are not many new features in the current model compared to last year’s release. Additionally, Apple unveiled new Mac Studio and Mac Pro versions at WWDC 2023, along with updates to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, MacOS Sonoma, and the remarkable Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
