Apple TV+ Struggles with $1 Billion Annual Loss as Competition in Streaming Heat Up

According to a report from the Information on Thursday, Apple is experiencing losses exceeding $1 billion (approximately Rs. 8,604 crore) annually from its streaming platform.

Since the debut of Apple TV+ in 2019, the technology behemoth has spent over $5 billion (nearly Rs. 43,020 crore) each year on content; however, it scaled back this expenditure by about $500 million (around Rs. 4,302 crore) last year, as mentioned in the report.

Apple has yet to provide a response to a request for comment from Reuters.

Apple TV+, recognized for its original programming like «Ted Lasso,» «The Morning Show,» «Shrinking,» and «Severance,» continues to trail behind competitors such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon’s Prime Video regarding subscriber numbers.

According to recent statistics, industry leader Netflix boasts a subscriber total of 301.63 million, while Disney+ has 124.6 million subscribers and Warner Bros Discovery follows with 116.9 million.

The iPhone manufacturer does not disclose specific subscriber numbers for Apple TV+, but five analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha estimate it to have reached 40.4 million by the end of 2024.

Productions on Apple TV+ have garnered over 2,500 nominations and 538 awards, as stated by CEO Tim Cook during an earnings call in January.

As competition intensifies in the streaming sector, media companies are increasingly offering bundled services at lower prices to attract budget-conscious consumers.

Apple TV+ is included in a package from Comcast that pairs the service with Peacock and Netflix for $15 (approximately Rs. 1,290) monthly. When purchased alone, Apple TV+ is priced at $9.99 (around Rs. 860) per month in the United States.

The company based in Cupertino, California, also offers Apple TV+ as part of bundles with services like iCloud, Apple Music, and more through the Apple One program.
