Apple Confirms Third Season of Severance as Sci-Fi Hit Retains Streaming Crown

Following a season that unraveled several major enigmas but left fans with lingering questions and increased the personal stakes for the beloved macrodata refiners, it’s no surprise that Apple has renewed one of its most popular series. Just as the finale of the second season premiered on Apple TV+, the company announced Severance is set to return for a third season.

The service reports that Severance became the most-viewed series on its platform throughout season two. This sci-fi thriller has surpassed Ted Lasso, which Apple was also recently renewed.

If all goes smoothly, the break between seasons of Severance should be shorter this time. Viewers had to wait three years for the second season, primarily due to filming hold-ups linked to writers’ strikes and actors’ strikes in 2023.

This week, The Information disclosed that Apple has cut its initial content spending for Apple TV+ by 10 percent, reducing it from $5 billion in an effort to control expenses. The company reportedly incurs losses exceeding $1 billion annually on Apple TV+, making it the only Apple subscription service that operates at a loss, despite having amassed 45 million subscribers last year. Nevertheless, Apple appears willing to continue backing high-budget productions like Severance as long as they continue to succeed.

No release date for season three of Severance has been announced yet. In the meantime, I plan to act like an innie to hopefully avoid any spoilers until I get a chance to watch the season two finale.
