Metas AI Innovation: Automated Comment Generation for a More Engaging Instagram Experience

In recent years, Meta has introduced an array of artificial intelligence features and capabilities into its applications, even experimenting with AI-generated characters that possess unique profiles and personalities, though they later abandoned this initiative after being deemed creepy and unnecessary.

As part of another potentially unpopular move among users, Meta intends to utilize AI to facilitate interactions among friends by assisting them in writing comments on Instagram.

A user on X, Jonah Manzano, who frequently explores new social media features, discovered a prompt in Instagram reading «Write with Meta AI,» which allows users to receive AI-generated suggestions for comments on other users’ posts.

Those with access to this experimental feature will see a pencil icon adjacent to the text input area beneath a post. Clicking it grants entry to Meta AI, which will analyze the photograph and propose three comment options.

For instance, if a picture shows someone smiling and giving a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments like «Lovely living room,» «I love the cozy vibe,» or «Great spot for a photo shoot.» If the initial AI-generated comments are not to users’ liking, they can refresh the page to receive additional suggestions.

«We regularly test new features so that you can utilize Meta AI in our apps,» a Meta representative informed TechCrunch via email. «In addition to messaging, you can apply Meta AI in areas such as comments, feeds, groups, and search to make interactions more engaging and useful.»

Meta has not provided specific details about the availability of this test feature but noted that it previously experimented with AI-generated comments on Facebook last year.

This new feature is likely to be unpopular among users who prefer leaving comments on Instagram without AI assistance, particularly those who believe their friends deserve genuine feedback rather than automated responses. Many reminisce about the era when Instagram felt more authentic and less effort was required, making the addition of AI comments seem unnecessary.

As with any experimental feature, it remains unclear if Meta plans to roll this out more widely, and if so, when that might occur.
