Referees Mix-Up: A Goal Declared, Then Quickly Revoked in NHL Match

NHL referee Michael Markovic hesitated while announcing the decision following a video review during the third period of the game between the New Jersey Devils and the Florida Panthers (3-1).

Florida’s Sam Reinhart scored with 1:17 left in the third period, but contact between his teammate Anton Lundell and Devils goalie Jake Allen rendered the goal invalid. The Panthers challenged the call, but their appeal was unsuccessful.

Markovic initially counted the goal but quickly retracted his decision and declared the goal was not valid, imposing a minor penalty on the Panthers.

«After the review, the on-ice decision stands. We have a good goal. Oh, sorry, excuse me! After the review, there is no goal! The Panthers are assessed a minor penalty for delay of game,» the referee announced.
