Pro-Kremlin Leader in Nizhny Novgorod Detained Amid Fraud Investigation

Law enforcement officials in the central Nizhny Novgorod region detained the local leader of a pro-Kremlin political group on suspicion of fraud, as reported by Russian media on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.

Andrei Zhiltsov heads the regional chapter of the People’s Front, an initiative launched by Vladimir Putin in 2011 to foster national unity and promote social initiatives. He is also said to lead the Nizhny Novgorod Volunteer Service, which collaborates with local businesses and charities to inspire civic involvement among the youth.

As reported by the business newspaper Kommersant, authorities conducted searches at Zhiltsov’s residence as well as at the offices of both organizations. However, staff members at the regional People’s Front office claimed to local reporters that they were not aware of any such searches or arrests taking place.

Local media outlet NIA Nizhny Novgorod indicated that the investigation pertains to alleged financial misconduct involving funds associated with Russia’s national projects, a set of development initiatives promoted by President Putin.

The specific amount Zhiltsov is accused of misusing has not been disclosed.

Authorities have not yet issued any public statements regarding the alleged arrest.
