Putin Appoints Alexander Gutsan as New Prosecutor General in Russia

President Vladimir Putin has put forward Alexander Gutsan, the former deputy prosecutor general and current presidential envoy to the northwestern region of Russia, as the next prosecutor general of the country.

Gutsan will take over the role from Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, who has been nominated to serve as the chief justice of Russia’s Supreme Court.

Andrei Klishas, a senator from United Russia and chairman of the Constitutional Committee in the Federation Council, announced the nominations via his Telegram channel on Thursday.

Klishas mentioned that joint preliminary discussions regarding the candidacies of Krasnov and Gutsan will take place next Tuesday among the Federation Council committees.

Following these discussions, the senator stated that his committee intends to present both nominations for consideration during the Federation Council session the following Wednesday.

Since 2018, Gutsan has held the position of presidential envoy to the Northwestern Federal District. Prior to this role, he was Russia’s deputy prosecutor general for 11 years.

Gutsan is a former classmate of Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, both of whom graduated from Leningrad State University in 1987 with degrees in law.
